The 90-day killing spree left an estimated 500,000 Rwandan Tutsis and politically-moderate Hutus dead. Extremists in the Hutu government unleashed death squads and urged the Hutu population to join in the killing of Rwandan Tutsis and moderate Hutus. The dead were either left to rot, or thrown into pits such as this one.
